Dust and Sandstorm (DSS)

Dust and Sandstorm (DSS) have traditionally been seen as a natural phenomenon which occurs from the existing deserts of the Yellow River region. However, recent studies have pointed out the rapidly expanding overgrazing and farmlands due to land conversion in the vicinity of the DSS source areas as new causes, and subsequently the DSS has been recognized anew as a global environmental issue, whose magnitude has been increasing due to anthropogenic impacts.

In spring, DSS is carried on a prevailing westerly wind and fall widely in downwind regions of the Mainland China, the Korean Peninsula and the Western Japan. Since its health impact is also a concern, the cooperation among the governments in the East Asian region has been advancing.
