[Preliminary Program as of 28 December]

**Details of the Program Subject to Changes**

Growing threats of changing climate and climate related disasters, emerging concern of waste including marine plastics and e-waste, air pollution, and other types of pollution and environmental degradation are posing challenges to sustainability of our society and economy, while addressing these issues has become a priority and the responses mainstreamed both in policy and business domains. This has been evident in a series of key intergovernmental meetings as exemplified by G20 Summit and ASEAN Summit, hosted by Japan and Thailand respectively in 2019.

On the other hand, some reports indicate that our sustainable development goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved by 2030 without accelerating our efforts. Fulfilling the gaps calls for policies, technologies, services, innovation, research, collaboration, and partnerships for our environment. Such "Environmental Solutions" can be co-created, enhanced and disseminated through the collaboration between Thailand and Japan. The gaps also represent huge opportunities, particularly, for both countries’ business sectors.

In this context, Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Thailand will jointly organize the event 'Thailand-Japan Environmental Solutions Week' in Bangkok, from 14 to16 January, 2020, in collaboration with relevant partners to facilitate partner matching and exchange of innovative ideas for Environmental Solutions.

OBJECTIVES

Leaders, executives, and experts from national and local governments, business, research institutes, and other key stakeholders from both Japan and Thailand will meet together, and present and discuss how they can collaborate for environmental solutions and achieve SDGs.

Parallel Session 4: Innovations for a Circular Economy: Unlocking Business Opportunities for driving towards a circular economy in Thailand

14:00-17:00

Room: Mayfair B

Organized by:     Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, United Nations

                                            Environment Programme

The transition to a circular economy represents an enormous business opportunity globally. Alongside this trend, there is a growing interest in innovative and entrepreneurial businesses as the startup wave sweeps across Asia. These two trends combined provide an exciting opportunity to achieve sustainable consumption and production (Sustainable Development Goal 12).

Innovation ecosystems are being developed to bring together governments, large businesses, entrepreneurs and intermediaries to bridge the innovation and circular economy trends. The Ministry of Environment Japan and the United Nations Environment Programme is one example of supporting innovative business solutions for circular economy and sustainable lifestyles under the One Planet network. There are now a number of growing environmental startups in Thailand that are filling the gaps between the reality and the sustainability goals with viable business models. The collaboration between Thailand and Japan can support such startups by financially, technically or other means and, on the other hand, can support the growth of partner companies by innovation and challenging the areas that are unreachable by big cooperates. The session will provide the opportunity of dialogue among the stakeholders and potential partners.
