JPRSI-related Seminars on Climate Change/Air Pollution

The Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) was held in Yokohama from August 20 to 22, 2025. As part of the thematic events of TICAD9, “Africa-Japan Partnership for a Climate-Resilient and Decarbonized Africa” took place on August 20, followed by “Africa Clean Air Programme: From Asia to Africa” on August 21.

OECC served as the overall organizer of the seminars and contributed to their smooth implementation, which brought together more than 80 participants, including online attendees.

The seminar “Africa-Japan Partnership for a Climate-Resilient and Decarbonized Africa” was convened on August 20, 2025. It featured presentations on the partnership between the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and the African Development Bank (AfDB); Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) projects supported through the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) grant that applies the Fukuoka Method to landfill sites; adaptation projects enhancing the climate resilience of small-scale farmers; and initiatives by Japanese local governments, private companies, and other stakeholders. Overall, the seminar shared the progress and potential of climate cooperation between Japan and Africa.

During the seminar, MOEJ and AfDB signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) on cooperation regarding environmental conservation and other relevant areas.

The SOI includes building collaboration on environmental conservation, pollution control, and nature conservation, and confirms their intention to strengthen cooperation on climate change measures including the JCM, as well as adaptation and loss & damage, and public health improvement through waste management.

In the panel discussion, active exchanges took place on promoting climate change adaptation in Africa, including the introduction of ongoing initiatives and investment opportunities from Japan to Africa.

The seminar “Africa Clean Air Programme: From Asia to Africa” was convened on August 21, 2025. Focusing on air pollution control and environmental improvement in Africa. The seminar was co-organized by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the MOEJ.

In the panel discussion, international organizations and country representatives actively exchanged their views on both policy and technological approaches for achieving a sustainable future, sharing successful examples from the Asia region. As a result, participants included not only government officials but also researchers and private-sector practitioners, which enabled lively discussions on practical forms of public-private collaboration for building a sustainable society.

In the evening, the networking reception was held with the participation of representatives from twelve countries across Africa and Asia. Japanese private companies showcased their innovative environmental technologies and achievements, helping to strengthen connections with researchers and policymakers from participating countries.
